When I hear that, I automatically think of Conrad's book "Heart of Darkness," in which darkness symbolized many things, the most obvious one being the color of the Africans' skin, but also their perceived barbarism by the Europeans, the "darkness" of their mind, over the enlightened. So, to dismiss all debate over whether the term is racist, particularly over the meaning of the analyses of such people as Chinua Achebe and the professors disagreeing is beyond acceptable, and does not, in my opinion, constitute a real understanding of the term or its history.
